Roopa Ganguly was born on 25th November 1966 in Kalyani near Kolkata, West Bengal. She passed secondary school from Beltala Girls High School. He then graduated from Jazmaya Devi College, Kolkata. Rupa married Dhurb Mukherjee in 1992. But their marriage got divorced in 2006. The couple’s only child, Akash, was born in 1997. He then moved to Mumbai and started living together with his co-artist Dibyendu there. But now he is also separated from Dibyendur.

Acting Life

Roopa Ganguly made her acting debut in 1985 in the movie Saheb starring Anil Kapoor after her graduation. Then in 1986, he did a wonderful performance in the Malayalam movie ‘Ethile Inyam Baru’. He then acted in “BR Chopra’s” mythological television series Mahabharata which remains a milestone in his acting career. After that he played the lead role in Mrinal Sen’s ‘Ekdin Achanak’. After that, he acted with great success in several Hindi movies and gained considerable popularity.

He then came to Kolkata and acted in many Bengali films in the 1990s. He acted in the films of famous directors like Mrinal Sen, Gautam Ghosh, and Rituparn Ghosh. Roopa Ganguly portrayed the character of a confident woman in Gautam Ghosh’s ‘Padma Nadiman Majhi’.

She also played the role of Ansuya, a dedicated dancer in Aparna Sen’s Yugant. After that he acted in movies like Rituparn Ghosh’s Antarmahal and Shekhar Das’s Krantikaal. In 2011, she won the National Award for Best Playback Singer for the two Rabindra Sangeets “Dure Kaho and Aji Bijan Bane” in the Aditi Roy-directed movie ‘Absehe’.

She was awarded for her husky and haunting voice in the songs Dure Kothay and Aji Bijan Ghare.
